Biological Incentive System

William B. Irvine has come up with a concept of a BIS (Biological Incentive System). It may explain a great deal of the food issues. If we desire food, it is the food we need or something else, or specifically one component? On Desire, why we want what we want, is an interesting read.

I am an eccentric, according to this book, and I always knew that, sort of. There are a few things that the author stops short of saying, ie, the cause of desire is emotional, intellectual, psychological, and I will add chemical and physiological. Some desire are just there naturally in individuals. There is nothing we can do, they are just there. If it happens to be eating, we need to expect obesity, and now there is the issue of learning to live while going against our nature. That is the problem.

Now how do I overcome this issue? .... Move the resisting  desire from intellectual to emotional drive desire to get stronger motivation.... but how does one do that? ....

Protein Satiation

Public opinions says protein is satiating. yes/no. I do not think that is true. It may be up to some point, but above that point it appears to drive hunger, at least in some of us. Too much protein is also not good. The amount may very widely.

Protein Reqirements

Most of the modern protein requirements are based on when the body's studied start to produce nitrogen, aka burn protein. Those values are therefore maximum requirements, not minimum requirements. And then there is the issue of individual variation, how far below the mean am I, or how far above. Since excess protein make me hungry, I now believe, the often give advise to not be low on protein may be just plain wrong.

Orientals live on rice and little else, 8% protein. The Irish lived on potatoes (7% protein) after about 1510, and little else, a bit of fish, dairy, the odd animal. WHO says 5%. Most vegetables have +30% protein, and the vegans do not have protein issues, but other issues. Protein is not something to worry about, unless it is excess.

Typical value of 1 gm/kg LBM may be high by a factor of 2 of where the target should be, if we even should care about it, as long as we can tolerate that amount.  Fat, -O6, is more important.

It would really piss me off if my whole life obesity issue is simply the result of eating too much protein. Protein is need for growth, but a lot less is needed for maintenance. What study shows the requirements for a 60+ low activity male?

Rabbit Starvation

Can one become obese and not have any energy through rabbit starvation?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rabbit_starvation

"If there are enough rabbits, the people eat till their stomachs are distended; but no matter how much they eat they feel unsatisfied."

Is this one of the causes of the obesity epidemic?  Is the problem not enough fat or too much protein?

This sounds like the bends. Is this mild nitrogen poisoning?

inositol craving

If I suffer from inositol craving, it is far different than other craving, likely caused by insulin resistance or too much of something, an addiction like craving. It is rational to think that a deficiency craving should be different from a addiction like craving, for that may be necessary for survival to know the difference. I had never felt the difference before, but I did this week. N=1, high fruit inositol experience is over. My conclusion, one bit of fruit is enough to keep the inositol type craving away, and if not, now I know the difference between a deficiency craving and a addiction like or insulin resistance like craving.

Next question: What would mild rabbit starvation look like? Am I eating too much protein?

inositol - day 3

I started on sunday with the high fruit / cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit, as a natural method of getting inositol. Some fruit at every meal. The cravings have reduced, but with N=1, how do we separate real from placebo effect? And then there were days where the cravings would remit before.

I did get a fair bit done Monday and Tuesday, but then, there has always been better days. It will be the duration of the effect that I need to look for.

Bio-availability of Inositol

Tess got me questioning ... Wiki -

Inositol or its phosphates and associated lipids are found in many foods, in particular fruit, especially cantaloupe andoranges.[6] In plants, the hexaphosphate of inositol, phytic acid or its salts, the phytates, are found. These serve as phosphate stores in the seed. Phytic acid occurs also in cereals with highbran content and also nuts and beans, but inositol when present as phytate is not directly bioavailable to humans in the diet, since it is not digestible

Does this imply that inositol in fruit is bio-available and phytated inositol is not? or all inositol is not bio-available? When I first read it, I assumed that non phylated was bio-available.
and then the other paper says..."

To determine whether the data presented in Appendix Table I could be used to develop diets containing a known amount of myo-inositoh, eight diets whose calculated myo-inositoh content ranged from 225 to 1500 mg were prepared. Each diet was estimated to contain 1800 kcal and was planned according to the food exchange lists of the American Diabetes Association. "

So the question becomes it inositol bio available or not? Does fruit replacement for the few vegetable I eat kill craving?
Well note the high concentration fruits, cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit. Well, after three meals of my normal meats, and fruits, I will say that it looks promising. In those three meals, were about 300 calories of fruits. By the third meal, I think my hunger/cravings were reduced, but these do remit from time to time a bit, so it is not clear to me if the fruit is doing it or not. I will give it a week or so.

Note that the caloric density of cantaloupe is 0.35, while oranges are 0.70, and grapefruit is 0.42. Therefore cantaloupe or grapefruit is the best bet.

Inositol

Dr. R Peers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8bsxRVl38p4

Inositol sounds like some miracle stuff, cures anxiety, depression, gives you energy, kills food cravings, curbs booze cravings...

be wary, very wary, of such products...

Inosital - Do I make enough?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inositol

Is it available at the local Walmart? No, not in Canada. It can be used to make plastic explosives. OK, do I want to consume 5 grams of something used in plastic explosives anyway? Made from corn in Iowa.

Where does it occur naturally? http://ajcn.nutrition.org/content/33/9/1954.full.pdf

Some fruit is satiating.

Paleo typically says not to much fruit.

Self test required. Some of cantaloupe, oranges, grapefruit at every meal until the hunger/craving disappears, or this does not work. Give it a week.

Test font size 2

this is with reduced browser font and increased computer font, editor on normal as was the last, but both these reduce the font on my page.

Test of Font Size

Sorry Jan, I do not know how font size is controlled across the web. The fonts can be scaled on the individual computers, and for me to be able to work on this lap top machine, I have mine scaled at 1.25 on this machine, and 1.5 on the desk top.  I switched to FireFox browser, and the editing screen produces such large font I was reducing it to where it looks ok on the web page as viewed through my browser. I just do not know how to set it so it will work on all computers.

I note that there are many sites I need to adjust, both up and down. This can be done with the control key, and - or + keys. On my browser there is also - and + that scale the font size, and these seem to be independent of the computer. I have just reset this computer to default, but I will not be able to work for long like this.

Please let me know if this works for you all.

Life Expediency

Life expediency, as measured estimated by the Canadian health care system, takes age into account, and negative factors, diabetes, heart conditions, weight above the obese level, and the like, but does not consider any "positive" factors such a life style. WTF. Well as my doctor put it, "the quality of life may be better, but those factors do not increase the life, according to a number of studies." And guess what, that is what Framingham Study shows. Well how about that, there is no point in excessive exercise, but it may make you feel better about yourself.

We are what we think, according to the old Romans. There is nothing wrong or right, but thinking makes it so.

Are artificial sweeteners appetite stimuli?  http://tesspaleojourney.blogspot.ca/2013/07/consumer-warning-media-ignorance-causes.html

And so are tomatoes according to my self testing. Is that why Richard Bernstein warns about tomatoes?

Is the whole developed world obesity issue about appetite stimulus in the food supply, including sugar, wheat, omega 6 oils, and all those other nasty chemicals?

What do I know.

Both hunger and cravings

What is happening today, I am suffering from both hunger and cravings. There is no help. It is days like today that I just want to shut up and eat myself into an early grave.

Natural Appetite Level

If there is a characteristic individual natural appetite level, there should be something like a normal distribution of the property. But how does one measure appetite, let alone get enough data to be able to say anything about it, especially distribution?

Well there is an easily measurable surrogate for appetite, and that is free range weight, before we start to perturbation appetite with substantial rational self mediation of weight. That would occur in 5 to 7 year old children, and what would that distribution look like? Normal distribution, perhaps now skewed to the heavy end, but 50 years ago... perhaps normal distribution. The numbers would need to be normalized by some factor for body type or height; however, even those could be affected by energy and nutrient intake.

So if appetite variation is natural, and leads to a greater body weight, where does this leave the diet industry? No where, just as they are today. Confused.

A search for "natural appetite level" brings up.... "People who stay thin do so because they (often by accident) eat the right amount of food to match their calorie needs. Their slimness tends to be a combination of the body shape they have inherited, their natural appetite level, what they eat and how much exercise they get. Research has shown they do not have naturally higher metabolic rates than other people and cannot magically spirit away calories."....the other end of the problem. (http://www.weight-loss-and-wellness.com/WEIGHT-GAIN.html)
But this shows that others also think there is a natural appetite level.

Herbalife is a marketing of diet products organization.

Now that we have identified the possibility, what does this information do for my continued recovery? ....next...

But then what do I know?

obviously

It is now apparent to me that these excessive hunger and craving issues are natural and perhaps a chemical issue or hypersensitivity to something, not necessarily in the food but may also be in the food. Endorphin and exorphins come to mind as the most likely, since wheat, nuts and dairy products seem to drive the hunger, cravings, and urges.

Food addiction is real, and is the topic of my other blog, just to keep food addiction and food issues separate. It reality, these cannot be separate. It is the over driven desire to eat that is the problem. Many recovery programs suggest it is a addictive behavior, or habit, but, consider that it may be natural, genetic, a physical characteristic, not anything learned. That explains my early eating problems also.

A human instinct, like any instinct, varies with the individuals, not just the family. That is why artists must do art, mechanical people deal with the real world items, and some people think, why not some small tail of the population distribution be natural overeaters. Have you ever tried to train a husky to fetch... It just ain't go'na happen, but to run and pull, that is no problem, just try to stop them; and there are those Labs that just eat until the food runs out. So why not some people.

All the addiction treatment say that craving will go away with time, and yet I still crave, so I am calling bull shit on that. Horvath, Peele, and there smart crew are out to lunch on that point. We may be just the toe of the population, but those of us who have battled the bulge all our lives will attest to the ongoing cravings that drive the problem. Oh well, shit happens, and now how to we learn to live with the cravings without overeating.

Realizing that it is not a addiction, but a physical problem may cause a difference in self treatment. Rigorous self honesty, what. So now I must go against my nature. How does one do that? But I have been doing that all my life. I was never designed to write, yet, as a geotechnical engineer, writing was basically how I made a living all these years, that and solving problems.

Oh well, shit happens, what do I know.

what if

What if this is as good as it gets? Can I live like this long term, weight wise?

Seneca, another old Roman, said" For no amount of wisdom enables one to do away with physical or mental weaknesses that arise from natural causes; anything inborn or ingrained in one can by dint of practice be allayed, but not overcome."

How long can I tread water? as Crosby put it.

Are these food cravings be genetic/ chemical/ and can never be overcome?

This goes along with another quote "there is no use explaining the facts to a man who's paycheck depends on him not understanding the  facts."
If food addiction is a natural chemical condition of small group of the population, not an addiction or habit, we simply must learn to overcome the natural chemical drive of nature to survive.

Does anyone offer such services?   To overcome nature.... just do this... that is exactly what you need and you are in luck... just what we sell.

FO religious people. You have nothing to offer. Gods are concepts, incorporeals, real ideas but do not exist, but are "sayables" like time, ... voids ... and other concepts. The best single argument against gods is the multitudes of deities; it is likely that they are all just concepts, rather than any one being " the one." I study stoicism. It does provide some help without offending reason, or more correctly, because of reasoning, I study stoicism.
